The Pioneer grapplers have started their season with 45 strong.  Leading the team are eight returning state qualifiers, of which seven of them placed.  "We are really looking forward to a successful season," said Head Coach Beau Chester.  "Our hard work over the years to build this program is on the verge of paying off."
The crew traveled to John Day last Saturday to face off against ten other teams and rose to the top placing second behind Burns, who have had eight consecutive State titles.  "I feel that we started off on the right side of the mat," said Chester.  "We outshined the other GOL teams which puts us ahead of the game."
Mac-Hi carried home four champion titles at the hands of Jesse Sargent at 125, Jake Morris at 152, Josh Rutheford at 160 and Brandon Kralman at 189.  A second place finish was earned by Wyatt Law at 160 while Lawrence Timmons at 215, Patrick Sheets at 140, Kyle Ledford at 130 and Jordan Leinbach at 119 placed third.
"This is one of the hardest working teams I have had so far," said Chester.  "I have a good feeling about the rest of our season."
The Pioneers will leave for one of the biggest tournaments of the season today.  LaGrande will host the Muilenburg Tournament that will run through tomorrow.

The Pioneer grapplers traveled to LaGrande last weekend to attend the Mullenburg Tournament.  15 other teams from across the northwest met them there to face off on the mats.  "I feel like the team did a good job," said Mac-Hi Head Coach Beau Chester.  "We are just working hard to peak at the end of the season as we head to State."
Mullenburg is one of the toughest tournaments that the Pioneers go to, right behind the Oregon Classic held in Portland January 8 - 9.  "I am always excited to attend the LaGrande tournament to see where the kids are and what we need to work on," said Chester.  "I really view it as the starting point of our season and it can only get better from here."
The Pioneers brought home a fourth place finish with 172.5 points behind 5A Barlow, 3A Burns and 6A Oregon City.  "I am very happy with this finish," commented Chester.  "The team lost some heartbreaking championship matches that could have gone either way and preformed better than I expected at this point in the season."
Placing Pioneers include Jesse Sargent at 125 in second, Wyatt Law at 152 in second, Josh Rutherford at 160 in second, Angel Palacios at 285 in third, Brandon Kralman at 189 in fourth and Jake Morris at 152 and Lawrence Timmons at 215 both bringing home fifth place finishes.
The Pioneers will host their annual Christmas Tournament tomorrow starting at 11am.

The Mac-Hi Grapplers took the GOL Districts head on this past weekend in LaGrande and came out the District Champions.  "We are very proud of our kids," said Ralph Brown the Principal of Mac-Hi.  "We just sent 15 of them off to State this morning (this past Wednesday) and we are hoping for an outstanding outcome for the team."
Leading the Pioneers is their Heavy Weight, Angel Palacios, who not only took the District title for the third year in a row, but placed second at State last year.
The team has been steadily climbing the ladder since the "Rein of Jerry Ewing," which ended about ten years ago and produced four State titles and 15 District Championships.  The kids have worked very hard on their quest to capture the elusive District title which they have now won two years in a row.
The Pioneers won District by three points, just edging out Ontario, and stood six wrestlers at the top of the awards podium.  Jesse Sargent, Ryan Bullock, Josh Rutherford, Brandon Kralman, Lawrence Timmons and Angel Palacios all lined up on one side of the mat before the finals to shake hands with the opponent they would later defeat to win themselves the right to be called a "GOL Champion."
The last State title won by the Pioneers was 18 years ago. But don't forget, that the Mac-Hi District title drought, was a long eleven years before 2009 when and they rose to the top.  Is there a State title in the future?
